Ahem.  *Shimmies up to mic and taps it*.  Hello. I'm Yvonne. I'm a wife and mother of 2 with a thing for fancy glasses, dancing awkwardly, and all things Anthony Bourdain.

Greetings & Salutations

Yvonne Simms

I've always been a quiet observer and a listener.  Growing up, on Sunday afternoons, my father cooked dinner and tell stories of his childhood in West Africa.  I'd imagine what the people and places he described so vividly looked like.  There were some photos to match with faces, but not nearly enough to paint the whole picture of an entire generation of my family that never crossed the Atlantic.

When I became a mother, I realized a few things.  First, children grow way too fast!  Second, I could use my camera to document the story of our lives, so hopefully when they're telling the story of their childhood to their little ones, they can break out the photo albums and show them exactly what it looked like.  With that same intention, I document your story, striving to capture the authentic moments between husbands and wives, children and parents, and multiple generations of your family.  It's both a pleasure and an honor and I thank you for letting me observe, listen and document your stories.

Best,
YS

I Believe the best photos are the ones that help you remember.

MY Children

Fola is 2 going on 25 and Judah's 1 and by the looks of things, you can see what his life is about.  They inspire and challenge me every day.  I pick up my camera to tell our story.

I'm an immigrant, so I guess wanderlust is in my blood.  My parents Sierra Leonean, I was born in London, and I studied/lived abroad 4 times during college.  This image is from my trip to Goree Island, Senegal, a vibrantly beautiful place with a sad history and the best mangoes you'll ever taste.

Anthony Bourdain is actually my second cousin twice-removed.

Eating...While Traveling

A couple years ago, my mother sent me a package of photographs. This one is from my 3rd birthday and my mother is helping me cut the cake.  The woman standing in pink was my pre-school teacher.  When my mother saw her at our wedding, she recognized her face, but it wasn't until she saw the photo that she remembered who she was.  That's my husband's aunt. Small world, right?
