Hannah and Kwaku: Hotel Monaco Philadelphia Wedding

November 29, 2017

A pretty September afternoon.  I walked into the second floor suite at the Hotel Monaco in Old City Philadelphia to meet Hannah once more.  A month before, at her parent’s house in central New Jersey, I photographed the traditional Ghanaian engagement ceremony for her and her groom, Kwaku.  The West African ceremony the month before was joyful, colorful, playful, and warm- truly indicative of the type of people Hannah and Kwaku are.  During the more formal ceremony in September, guests gathered at the art deco hotel to witness their official union.  The details of the day told the story of who they were.  Children of Ghanaian immigrants.  A couple that loves to laugh and share inside jokes (peep the fondant ninja turtles on the cake).  Two people deeply committed to family, friends, and community.

Most of all, I was amazed by their generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness.  In August, the couple asked visitors to donate to the flood relief efforts in Sierra Leone.  During the wedding reception, Hannah indicated that they would donate funds collected during the “money dance” towards the same cause.

Here’s to the Hannah and Kwaku.  Thank you for allowing me to document this season of life for you and your family.

Daddy’s girl indeed.

So, when you meet Kwaku, he seems very reserved and quiet.  However, he sure did celebrate on his wedding night.  Can you blame him?  Hannah is amazing!

This couple was the longest married couple in the room (50+ years).  They get all the kudos.  #longevity
